Contextual Information

These 1952 Western Australian Claxton Shield blazer lapel pins were donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by Ben Shom. He was a key player in Western Australia's 1952 victorious Claxton Shield team. Starring in a record-breaking game of 16 innings, he led his side with three hits and scored the only run in a 1-0 ballgame.

Shom started his playing career in 1936 at the age of 17, which was the inaugural year of baseball in Western Australia. He represented Western Australia in interstate competitions during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. He captained the State team in 1949 and 1950 and was selected in the All-Star teams in 1950 and 1952.

Ben Shom was inducted into the Baseball Australia Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Baseball WA Hall of Fame in 2021.
