Overview

A white leather baseball with red stitching to the seams. It has been signed by members of the Western Australian team in the 1983 Claxton Shield Series. The ball is stamped with the manufacture's name and make-up of the ball.

Historical information

The 1983 Claxton Shield baseball series was the 44th series in the Australian national competition. It was played in Perth, Western Australia from January 6 to 16 at the newly completed Parry Field Stadium in Belmont. The stadium, Australia's first international-standard baseball ground, was officially opened by the Federal Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon. Tom McVeigh, during the opening ceremony. This ceremony and two of the Claxton Shield games were televised nationally by the ABC.

This is a match ball from the 1983 series and is signed by members of the Western Australian team: Bob Ossey, Don Kyle, Tony Stall, Tony Goadby, Don Knapp, Ken McGee, Gary Davidson, Graham Ward, Darryl Moyle, Steve Murdoch, Tony Adamson, Scott Cameron, Doug Oliphant, Peter McCarthy, Ray Michell, Tony Johnson, Russell Jarvis.

This baseball was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by Ian Brunton and is an important addition to the Museum's collection of Claxton Shield memorabilia.

Statement of significance

This rare object is of historic and social significance as it marks an important milestone in Western Australian baseball history, with the opening of the first purpose-built baseball stadium in the State. It also bears the names of those Western Australian players who took part.
