Overview

A black and white photo of curator Jenny Allen of the Newcastle Gaol receiving the "1983 Museum of the Year Award" which was awarded by Museums Australia and sponsored by the Westpac Bank.
In attendance is a Westpac Bank rep (no name supplied for the rep) and Councillor Mr Joseph Charles (Mac) Wroth .
Ms Jenny Allen is holding the framed award with the two men looking on.
This award is housed on the wall of the courtroom in the Newcastle Gaol.

Historical information

An education program based on "experiential learning in a museum" was introduced to the Newcastle Gaol Museum in 1983.
A courtroom was set up in an exhibition room, and a recording of a trial was played to visitors. This recreation remained in place for more than 25 years.
