OVERSHOT LOADER
c. 1955 - 1959A black and white photo of a large OD4 overshot loader which is central to the photo. The machine was designed to scoop up material, lift it up and dump it into a truck without having to turn around like a loading shovel.
Lifted soil surrounds it, and the backdrop is native bush.
Printed on the side of the blade is "Le Tourneau"
This machine is an "overshot loader". An overshot loader was used by the Toodyay Road Board to load earth and gravel onto trucks.
It was cable operated, not hydraulic, and the method of operation was to drive into the earth/gravel stockpile and get material into the scoop and reverse back to a waiting truck. The scoop was then raised up and over the top of the machine, causing the material to slide back along the extended bucket into the truck. Very dusty for the driver.
The Toodyay Road Board machine was on an Allis Chalmers HD 5 tracked machine and is believed to have been used in the 1950’s. Allis Chalmers was an American manufacturer of agricultural and industrial earthmoving equipment.
