THREE MEN AND AN OVERSHOT LOADER
c. 1960 - 1961A black and white photo of an overshot loader (large bulldozer) which is central to the photo.
Lifted soil surrounds it, and the backdrop is native bush.
A Mr Ferguson is in the driver's seat and two men in suits (one man is smoking a pipe) are standing to either side of the machine.
"Le Tourneau" is printed on the dozer above the driver.
Identified in the photo are: Dallas Ludemann, Road Board Chairman (1960-1961), Ced Ferguson, foreman, and John Pedder, Road Board Secretary (1954-1961).
An overshot loader was used by the Toodyay Road Board to load earth and gravel onto trucks.
It was cable operated, not hydraulic, and the method of operation was to drive into the earth/gravel stockpile and get material into the scoop and reverse back to a waiting truck. The scoop was then raised up and over the top of the machine, causing the material to slide back along the extended bucket into the truck. Very dusty for the driver.
The Toodyay Road Board machine was on an Allis Chalmers HD 5 tracked machine. Allis Chalmers was an American manufacturer of agricultural and industrial earthmoving equipment.
