Historical information

Images are from the Rutherford Album which is housed at the archives of the Rottnest Island Heritage Authority at Kingstown Barracks, Rottnest Island. The photographer was William Dennis Dawson, a professional photographer in Midland Junction. The images are dated between 1901 and 1902. The exact location that the images were taken is unknown, but the second image could be located on a bridge at either Guildford, Middle Swan or Upper Swan.

Contextual Information

The lesser-known and private Midland Railway Company was established at Midland Junction prior to the arrival of the WAGR workshops and was the catalyst for the settlement of the suburb. The company opened up the land between Midland and Walkaway by building the Midland Rail line and its locomotives serviced the line.
