Historical information

Hoffman Steam Pressed Brick Company was located at the present site of the truck arrester bed and public open space on Great Eastern Highway in Greenmount, previously referred to as 24 Mile Siding in Bellevue.

The brickworks began operating in the early 1900s under the ownership of Percy Robinson of ‘Undercliffe’. It was taken over by the Coulthard Brothers. A. Coulthard is pictured in the centre standing with arms folded.

Historical aerial photos show that three claypits were located on the site right up until the 1980s when they were filled. The kilns were located slightly south of Great Eastern Highway in the vicinity of what is now Wortley Road which runs parallel to the highway.

This image is one of three in the collection that illustrate the brickwork industry in Bellevue at the turn of the 20th Century. The Hoffman Steam Pressed Brick Company was prominent ion the brick industry in the Bellevue and Midland areas.
