Construction of the St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospital commenced in 2012 and the building was opened on 24 November 2015. The hospital replaced the old Swan District Hospital which closed on the same day when patients were transported from the old to the new hospital.

The new hospital is significant as part of the continuing story of hospitals and medicine in the Midland area since the late 19th century. Images document not only the construction of the hospital, interior and exterior images, but also images of the surrounding area taken from high up in the building giving context of the hospital in relation to adjacent buildings and land.
