Edwin Shepherd and Shepherd family

John Shepherd was born in 1843 in Hayling Island, England. His son, Edwin Harry was born in 1880 in Guildford, Surrey, England. In 1898 John (age 55) and Edwin, known as Harry (age 18) arrived in Western Australia and settled in the Swan Valley. They established a vineyard known as St Helena in William Street, Herne Hill where they produced table grapes which were marketed at Swan Settlers Cooperative. Harry married Mary Ann Whisler in 1915. They had nine children who all attended Herne Hill Primary School. They were well-known in the district and Harry was Chairman of the school P&C in the 1920s. John Shepherd died in 1927 aged 84. Harry died in 1949 aged 69 and Mary Ann died in 1970 aged 71. They are all buried in St Mary's Pioneer Cemetery, Middle Swan.
