TOODYAY SCHOOL DUKE STREET WITH CHILDREN AND TEACHERS

1905 - 1914
Subcollections
Overview

Small copy of a black & white photograph of group of school children and teachers taken outside Duke Street School.

(Note: Unsure if this has been identified correctly. The historic Old Newcastle School building on Duke Street in Toodyay is constructed out of soft, local orange-red brickwork accented by prominent, pointed Victorian Academic Gothic stone gables and tall, narrow, pointed gothic arched windows. The building behind this massive group of students features a flat, uniform brick façade with rectangular industrial double-hung sash windows beneath flat lintels and modern tin window hoods. The large class size (around 70–80 students in a single cohort) combined with the heavy masonry backdrop heavily resembles a turn-of-the-century metropolitan municipal school rather than a small regional Avon Valley pioneering school.)
