Overview

polished electro plated Britannia metal decorative bowl. Rim and the sides of the bowl forms a wavy pattern with a raised floral decoration around the edge of the bowl rim. Six large floral decorations engraved into the inside of the bowl. Engraved text in the middle of the bowl [To / MRS W. BUTCHER / FROM / BEDFORDALE CONG. CHURCH / AND A&H. SOCIETY / 1913].
On the sides of the bowl are metal hinges attached to a crescent shaped metal handle with a floral design, with negative spaces within the design.
On underside of the bowl is a round conical base, this end at top and tapers out at the bottom. Round indentation on underside of the base. Makers mark stamped in middle of this indentation. features text under the image of a hand raised up holding a pennant on a shaft.

Historical information

This decorative electro plated Britannia metal engraved bowl, made by Philip Ashderry & Sons of Sheffield in England, was presented to Mrs Hannah Sophie Butcher (nee Marsh).
Hannah was born in 1864 in local area in 1864 and grew up on Paradise farm in Bedfordale. In 1882 she married William Butcher. Hannah and William Congregationalists with Hannah founding the Bedordale Sunday School as well as being founding members of the Armadale Congregational Church. Following the death of William in 1895 Hannah devoted much of her time to the local community including the Bedfordale Congregational Church and the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She passed away in 1834, leaving behind six children, 21 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
