Historical information

In 1973 the Armadale-Kelmscott Historical Society launched a public appeal, chaired by Ivor T. Birtwistle, to raise $10,000 towards the construction of a new museum building in Armadale. The Shire of Armadale-Kelmscott agreed to pledge $2 for every $1 raised by the appeal. Numerous fund-raising events were held including, in early 1976, a Walkathon organised for local school children.
One of the participants was Kelmscott Senior High School student Dawn Hudson who managed to raise the most money during the event. for her efforts Dawn won a scenic flight over Perth and an invitation to the opening of the museum on April 25 1976. Overall the Walkathon raised over $2000 and helped the Historical Society get very close to their $10,000 target.
The new museum was built on land that was once a part of the Brookside home and orchards, established by Martin Jull in the 1890s. It was designed by architect Phil Pritchard, built by Geritt 'Harry' Bosveld and opened by retired Governor General Sir Paul Hasluck.
