Overview

Three lengths of felt material, each approximately 35mm wide, are sewn together to form one wide ribbon. The three pieces are attached with a red colour at the top, white in the middle and blue at the bottom. The stitching between each piece is of white cotton, and each end is finished off with two tassells of yellow wool attached to each segment, six in total at each end.

Printed on the top red ribbon, in yellow ink is [Byford Show 1953]. Printed on the middle white ribbon, in yellow ink, is [Champion] with a line either side, also in yellow ink. Printed in yellow ink on the bottom blue ribbon is [TAMWORTH BOAR].

The middle, white, ribbon is slightly worn, with some holes having developed as it has been possibly eaten away by insects.

Historical information

In June 1926, a public meeting in the Byford Hall decided to form the Byford Agricultural Society. The new committee worked hard to upgrade the recreation ground (now Briggs Park) to hold an Agricultural Show. The first Byford Agricultural Society Show was opened on the 13th of November 1926, and for the next 40 years the Byford Show was acknowledged as one of the most successful shows in Western Australia. However by 1966 public support had waned and this year saw the last Show in the Byford district.

This ribbon was awarded for the Champion Tamworth Boar at the Show. The Tamworth is a British breed of domestic pig. It is the only red-coloured British pig. The origin of the breed is unknown, however it appears to have developed near the town of Tamworth in south-eastern Staffordshire.

Statement of significance

This object is part of a collection that represents the important role Agricultural and Horticultural Societies have played in the supporting, promotion and development of rural industries in the City of Armadale as well as providing significant social events that brought large parts of the community together to celebrate the achievements of local families, orchards, farmers and horticultural. Agricultural and horticultural societies have operated in the City of Armadale since 1897 when the Kelmscott Agricultural Society was formed.
