Historical information

The Kelmscott Show was first proposed at a meeting of the Kelmscott Farmers & Fruit Growers Society in 1896, with the first show being held on 03/02/1897. The show proved to be so successful that it was decided to hold the show twice every year.

In 1897 The Society’s name was changed initially to the Kelmscott Agricultural Society then, in 1898, to the Kelmscott and Armadale Agricultural Society. This was later changed back to the Kelmscott Agricultural Society.

Ring events were included for the first time in 1898, with log chopping in February 1899 and entries for pigs in 1902.

The Kelmscott Show went into recess in 1930 and was disbanded in 1935 due to the effects of world recession. In 1938 it was decided to recommence the show on an annual basis. Since 1938, the Kelmscott Show has remained an annual event run by volunteers from the community.

The Kelmscott Show is held annually at Rushton Park, River Road, Kelmscott.

Statement of significance

This object is part of a collection that represents the important role Agricultural and Horticultural Societies have played in the supporting, promotion and development of rural industries in the City of Armadale as well as providing significant social events that brought large parts of the community together to celebrate the achievements of local families, orchards, farmers and horticultural. Agricultural and horticultural societies have operated in the City of Armadale since 1897 when the Kelmscott Agricultural Society was formed.
