The Australian Baseball League (ABL) was formed in 1989, representing Australia's first professional baseball league. At the time, the league replaced the interstate Claxton Shield Championship as the top baseball competition in the country. On July 4 of that year, the Perth HEAT was launched into baseball history.
The first ABL game was contested between Perth Heat and Adelaide Giants at Parry Field Baseball Stadium in Perth on 27 October 1989. Over the next 10 years of the ABL's existence, the Perth Heat were the second-most successful team in the league, finishing runner-up three times, winning the title in 1990/91 and again in 1996/97.
