1962 West Perth 'Indians' Night Baseball Team
1962A sepia-coloured photograph of the 1962 West Perth 'Indians' Night Baseball League team. The 14 players are wearing the 'Indians' night baseball playing uniform.
Wests Baseball Club was formed in 1936. In the early 1950s the club had been gradually losing support because it never had a district of its own. With the advent of night baseball in 1954 the club took the opportunity to combine with the 'A' reserve Postals team and formed the West Perth 'Indians' night baseball team. Through that combination, and playing as a district team, the club gained many new supporters, so the members unanimously agreed to change the name.
Previously Wests had purchased its own four-acre ground at Morley Park but to do so, had to become an incorporated body. In order to change their name, the club had to make application to the Supreme Court to do so, which was duly approved.
The 'Indians' were one of the inaugural West Australian Night Baseball League teams in 1954. This photograph shows the style of night baseball uniform worn by players in the 1960s. The 'Indians' wore red uniforms with blue lettering. The silky material ensured the players stood out under the floodlighting.
