Lewis Gunner Brass Badge as issued to Charles Frederick JACKMAN, W17457
c. 1935Lewis Gunner brass qualification badge consisting of the letters ‘LG’ above a laurel wreath with a silver coloured backing plate, three (3) lugs and three (3) split pins to secure the badge. The badge shows signs of blackening and oxidisation. The backing plate has some tarnishing.
The Lewis Gunner badge signifies proficiency in the use of the Lewis Gun and was worn on the upper right-hand sleeve of the gunner’s uniform. Originally a cloth badge that was sewn on, this was replaced with a brass or silver finish badge with a backing plate placed on the inside of the sleeve. The Lewis Gun was a significant weapon during the First World War and revolutionised infantry tactics due to its portability and rapid rate of fire. In the Second World War, the Lewis Gun was used on the Front Line against the Japanese by the British, Dutch, Australian and New Zealand Forces in the early years of the Pacific Campaign. It continued to be used as an aircraft machine gun in this conflict and also saw service in the Home Guard in anti-aircraft and airfield defence roles, and the Royal Navy until 1942.
