Black and White Photographic Postcard of Sailing Ships in Albany
c. 1940A black and white photographic postcard showing two (2) sailing ships in Albany, Western Australia. One (1) of the ships is in the foreground with the second in the midground. There is a logo of an anchor on the mainsail of the yacht in the foreground. The coastline can be seen in the far distance. Printed information appears on the reverse of the card along with a space bordered by the words Kodak and Australia for a stamp to be affixed. The postcard is part of the collection of Charles Frederick JACKMAN.
Princess Royal Harbour and the adjacent King George Sound have a long history of sailing ships with George Vancouver claiming his ‘discovery’ of the area in 1791 and assessing King George Sound as “The finest harbour in the Southern Hemisphere …” Matthew Finders surveyed the Harbour in the early 1800’s and his work was instrumental in Britain choosing the site as Western Australia’s first settlement. In December 1826 Major Edmund Lockyer arrived with his family on the brig ‘Amity’. A military outpost was established in ‘Frederick’s Town’ and in 1832 the name was replaced with ‘Albany’ by the Governor of the Swan River Colony after Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany. Settlement saw Albany become an important strategic port for mail, cargo, coal and overseas passengers arriving in Western Australia. From 1893 Princess Royal Fortress safe-guarded trade routes and was a vital strategic defence asset in the First World War in conjunction with King George Sound being the departure point for the first two convoys carrying Australian soldiers to Egypt and who would later land on Gallipoli. In the Second World War Albany again became a strategic defence post as well as an alternative submarine base for the American Navy due to the fear of Fremantle being attacked. In more recent times the Port of Albany has become a large export centre for grain, silicon sand and woodchips whilst receiving superphosphate for farming. The Princess Royal Sailing Club was established in 1909.
