Black and white photographic postcard of a part of the Tower of London showing the main gateway with a sentry box. Printed description at the bottom. On the back is only the postcard markings and a brief description of the photograph.

Historical information

Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On front “Gateway of the Bloody Tower / Tower of London” with “BLOODY TOWER / This Tower dates from the reigns of Edward III / and Richard II and was called by its present name / as early as 1597. It was originally known as the / Garden Tower and was popularly believed to be / the scene of the murder of Edward V and his / brother, the Duke of York, as well as of Henry VI” on back.
