First World War Black and White Photograph of The Boulac Bridge Cairo

1915 - 1919
Overview

A small black and white photograph showing the entrance to Boulac Bridge, Cairo. The bridge looks to be of iron construction with two elaborate brick columns either side of the entrance. There are streetlamps along the side of the road approaching the bridge and two large light features either side of the entrance. The entrance columns also have elaborate lamps atop. There is a tram emerging from the bridge and the tram lines can be clearly seen on the road tarmac. Two people can be seen walking away from the bridge on the right side of the photograph. The photograph has a small border and is in fair condition. The picture has a center fold and there is some form of discoloration on the bottom right side.

Historical information

One of Cairo’s iconic bridges, Boulac Bridge opened to the public in 1912 and throughout its history it carried a tram line, cars and pedestrians. The bridge was designed by the American engineer William Donald Scherzer and had a rolling and locking mechanism allowing it to open to river traffic. It was demolished in 1998.
