On 11 March 1998 the new City of Armadale pound was opened by Cr Richard Stubbs the Mayor of the City. The building had been designed and built by the City's Technical Services Directorate and is located on Kilburn Lane at the back of the City's Depot.
The City of Armadale has played a role in animal management since its formation in 1894 when they were tasked with issuing dog licenses. Over time the State Government amended the Dog Act and gave increased responsibility to local governments to manage dogs in their jurisdictions. In the 1930s a number of councils employed Dog Catchers/Rangers.
Armadale employed a Dog Catcher/Ranger sometime in the early 1950s.

This object is part of a collection of items that represent the role that local government has played in providing services to its local community. The City of Armadale was formed in 1894 as the Kelmscott Road Board and has grown from a time when it only provide roads and drains to today when the City provides a wide range of services including waste collection, libraries, museum, parks, sporting facilities, building licenses, environmental services, public events, street lighting, ranger services and community facilities.
