Statement of significance

This item is part of a collection that represents the brick making industry within the City of Armadale. Brick making has played a key role in the development of the City from the creation of mud bricks for homes in the early to mid 1800s through to the commercial production of kiln fired bricks in the early 1900s through to today. The availability of good clay and shale meant bricks could be easily produced locally. In the 1870s clay pits were established in Kelmscott and bricks were fired in earthen kilns then used to construct local buildings including St Mary's on the Valley church.
