METAL THREAD, GENERAL EMBROIDERY, HANGING

c. 1960 - 1969
Overview

This is one of the best examples of reuse of beautiful embroidery. India has a tradition of hand embroidery with silk and gold threads on their finest saris and garments. When these are no longer worn, the embroidery is removed and the pieces patched together to create another item. This is an excellent example of styles of finely embroidered bodice fronts, joined with other fabric to create hanging. Coming from many different garments, there is a wide variety of embroidery from hand to machine, all joined by a thick thread which is couched between the patches.

The individual patches have been well selected to colour match making this more special. Many others are more randomly patched and the whole piece is dyed to make it more cohesive.
