MACHINE EMBROIDERY, FELT, HANGING
An attractive piece depicting contemporary embroidered work by a member of the Innovative Stitchers Group in the Embroiderers’ Guild of WA in early 21st century.
Titled ‘Samurai’, it reflected the influence of Japanese culture on the donor, Lois, who enjoyed holidays with her daughter when she was working in Japan for 4 years.
Hand made maroon felt, machine embroidery design is the leaf of the gingko tree, a sacred tree in Japan has many associations with literature and legends. As well the shape of the leaf is like metal scales used in Japanese samurai armour. The rectangular strips which look like leather are felt covered with tissue paper painted black. The cross stitches over these are red hand made kumihumo braid. Backed with a patterned cotton fabric.
