GENERAL EMBROIDERY, HANDKERCHIEF
c. 1950 - 1959Hand embroidered / lace handkerchiefs have always been an important accessory for women until the advent of paper tissues. This delightful handkerchief embroidered in one corner with a house and garden with three blue swallows flying overhead.
While the "Bluebird of Happiness" is a recognised saying today, birds of blue have symbolised hope, happiness or love in many different cultures for centuries. European songs, plays and poems, have featured the bluebird. In the 1940s and 1950s, in Australia, the bluebird was popular for embroidery designs and jewellery for children such as a charm on bracelets, necklaces or brooches which could be engraved with names for Christenings or special occasions.
