GENERAL EMBROIDERY, SACHET
A fashionable lady’s sachet for bed night attire, England early 20th century.
Tambour hand embroidered in silk, on front of sachet base and flap.
Design of a butterfly, with sections of a fine silk cord couched down by machine.
Machine made, cotton fringed braid, 30mm wide, around the perimeter.
After WWII, women were liberated and the 1920s saw the Jazz Age and flapper dresses. Ladies, no longer compelled to wear for modesty, the heavy cotton neck- to-knee night attire of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, had elegant silk nightdresses and pyjamas. Sachets to store these delicate garments came into fashion and were often hand made.
