Mettler B5 Laboratory Scale used for weighing Milk
c. 1955 - 1965This is a B5 Mettler electronic balance that was first released in 1955 and manufactured through the 60s. The scale is contained in a rectangular green metallic box that has glass windows on three sides. Front centre bottom below the window there is a missing bakelite knob which is the sample lever. At the top front there is a cream metal plate that has 4 black bakelite knobs and a central window with a digital readout. The internal sample pan and its supporting rods are missing. As it is a mechanical balance, it is important for it to be level, so the four small feet are adjustable. When in use it should be located on a low vibration surface.
Capacity: 200g

The electricals are very simple, a transformer that steps down line voltage to around 6V and powers a lamp.
In 1945, Dr. Erhard Mettler Rook, a Swiss engineer, started a precision mechanics company in Küsnacht, Switzerland. He invented the substitution principle with a single-pan balance, capable of being produced in series. Analytical balances with a single weighing pan gradually replaced conventional two-pan balances in the laboratory.
In 1952, the measurement of up to one ten-millionth of a gram became possible with the laboratory balance products and "The Mettler Balance" proved to be a catchphrase in the laboratory.
Nowadays, after a number of mergers and acquisitions Mettler Toledo is a multinational manufacturer of scales and analytical instruments. It is the largest provider of weighing instruments for use in laboratory, industrial, and food retailing applications.
