'Lord Mayor's Appeal - China Famine Relief ' celluloid fundraising pin

The Lord Mayors of each city oversaw a large number of patriotic funds and charity appeals. This pin would have been sold during a community 'badge day' or public fundraising drive, with the wearing of the pin indicating that the person had made a donation.

Marshal Chiang Kai-shek (Generalissimo of the Republic of China) led Nationalist forces against Japanese occupation during World War Two.
This badge was produced to raise humanitarian funds in response to the devastating wartime food shortages and regional famines in China.

The Chinese famine occurred within the context of the Second Sino-Japanese War during 1942-1943.

"CHINESE FAMINE RELIEF
Lord Mayor's Appeal Launched

With the object of raising £10,000 towards the relief of starving Chinese, the Lord Mayor (Mr. Walker) has launched an appeal to be known as the Lord Mayor's Chinese Famine Relief Appeal. It is expected that the South Australian public will respond generously as one way of showing their admiration for the Chinese people who have resisted the Japanese during more than six years of war.
A similar appeal in Melbourne raised £45,000, after setting out for £20,000. All money will be sent to the Chinese Consul-General for Australia, who will forward it to China.
An executive committee consisting of the Lord Mayor (Chairman), Mrs. Ernest Puddy (Hon. secretary), Mr Dudley Mathews (Hon. organiser), the Rev. L. Robjohns, Mrs. E. R. James, and Mrs. Pak Poy has been appointed, and many functions are being arranged in connection with the appeal.
A badge day has been set down for September 3, and an attractive six penny badge with the Chinese flag and lettering on a yellow background will be for sale, as well as a 2/ emblem containing a Chinese scene with a pagoda and red ribbon. Another method of raising money will be by means of a rice
bowl into which every member of the family will be asked to place a coin on a certain day. Melbourne raised £2500 on its rice bowl day.
The Chinese Minister to Australia (Mr. Hsu Mo) will visit Adelaide during the appeal, but his only public speech, because of mourning for the death of the President of the Chinese Republic will be at the Commonwealth Club luncheon next Monday.
The Lord Mayor has headed the donation list with £10, and other cheques include £152 made up from sums received from various country branches (Alice Springs £100), as well as donations from other organisations and private individuals. The total of the fund has already passed £400.
Subscriptions may be sent to the Lord Mayor's secretary at the Town Hall. Adelaide."
