' Lord Mayors Fund Centenary Appeal' celluloid fundraising pin
c. 1948'Lord Mayors Fund Centenary Appeal' circular celluloid fundraising pin. It features a central portrait illustration of a smiling nurse wearing a traditional cap and uniform including a blue cape or tippet.
The text 'Lord Mayors Fund Centenary Appeal' is printed in black upper case letters around the circumference of the badge.
It has a metal pin threaded through a small hole under the nurse's cap for attachment. The reverse of the pin is cream paper on which the maker's details are printed in blue.
The Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation (now operating as the Greater Melbourne Foundation) began in 1923 in Melbourne. It was established by the then-Lord Mayor, Sir John Swanson, to support local hospitals and charities.
The Lord Mayors of each city oversaw a large number of patriotic funds and charity appeals.
This pin was produced to commemorate the Centenary Appeal, celebrating 100 years since the opening of Melbourne Hospital (Victoria's first public hospital) in 1848.
It would have been sold during a community 'badge day' or public fundraising drive, with the pin indicating that the person had made a donation.
Another almost identical pin was produced to raise money for the 'Lord Mayors Fund Annual Hospitals Appeal' , the only difference being the wording and the colour of the nurse's cape.
