'Wattle Day for Children 1926' fundraising badge - small size
1926Circular fundraising badge or button sold to support the 'Wattle Day for Children' appeal in 1926. It is made from printed paper between a tin base and celluloid cover.
It features a central depiction of an Australian kookaburra perched on a thin branch with yellow globular wattle flowers, all on a deep blue background. The words 'Wattle Day 1926' are written in white letters around the top and 'for Children' around the bottom.
The maker's details are printed on the rim of the badge.
The reverse has a metal back with a void into which a metal pin is secured for attachment.
The annual Wattle Day appeal for children charities has a long history. It was held for some years before World War One, and during 1914-18 was conducted by the Commonwealth Button Fund, which operated all patriotic and charitable appeals.
When the Commonwealth Button Fund was wound up in 1920, the Children's Welfare Association of Victoria took over the Wattle Day appeal. Large sums were raised, with the money distributed to the charitable associations taking part, according to the amounts which they collected.
At this time, the Children's Hospital was the largest institution operated by public support, and there were free kindergartens, creches, foundling homes, infant welfare centres, and convalescent homes.
