TOOL: PLANE, GROOVING - 'MARTIN AND SHAW' WOOD WITH BRASS TRIM, 'G.J.P.' STAMPED IN END

Subcollections
Overview

Grooving plane with rebated bottom. Stack is rebated on upper edge and has wedg shaped cut in one side through iron and wedge are clearly visible. This sliver of flat wood has also been inserted under iron to provide additional chocking for iron. A rectangular slot is cut into the inner side of the fence to make room for an adjustable steel depth stop, set by a brass thumbscrew at the top of the stock. The wedge which runs parallel to the iron is cut short at the base to avoid obstructing the escape of the shavings. The iron is set at approx. 50 degrees and appears to be home-made. The plane has probably been modified to accommodate the 2.9 cm wide blade with the depth stop having a slight depression ground into its side beside the blade. The adjustable 'plough' style fence is riveted loosely to two stems moulded in quirk ogee and astragal style. The stems are in turn riveted to two long arms - D shaped in section and tipped with brass. These slide through the stock and are fixed in the required position with captives "keys'" (wedges). The underside of the fence is also ornately cut in moulded pattern. Used for cutting wide grooves.
