BRACE: JOINER'S (AMERICAN PATTERN) AND TWO BITS

Overview

a) Brace - Joiner's / American Pattern - steel frame of rectangular form, rotating mushroom shaped hard wood head and handle. Steel "Barber" chuck - hollow, screwed shell, tapered inside, forces together the two jaws that hold the bit. Surface of handle covered with white paint blotches.
b) Centre bit - 3/4". Flat nose with one half bent upwards to form a cutter almost at right angles to the axis of the bit. The other half is prolonged downwards on the outside edge to form a sharp spur-cutter or nicker. Spike lead.
c) Twist bit 1/2". Three quarters of body length twisted into spiral shape with square-faced shaft leading to tapered square tang for insertion into brace. The bit has a "scotch' type head, featuring a screw type lead.
