PLANE: COMBINATION - STANLEY 'FORTY FIVE PLANE' , RED PAINT

Overview

Steel stock with wooden handle at one end - moulded with floral designs to body. Iron adjustor in front of handle - diagonal groove for iron. Depth stop fixed to side with thumb nut, adjusted from top with brass nut. From stock projects two rod-like arms along which slide the auxiliary sole and adjustable fence. The auxiliary sole consists of a long body parallel to the stock, fixed to arms by way of two brass thumb screws - between which is a semi-circular handle used to slide the sole backwards and forwards along the arms. The adjustable fence is also tightened any way of two brass thumbscrews to the side of the arms. Two curved arms hold a wooden long straight piece of polished wood parallel to the stock and auxiliary sole. The metal parts bear the remains of crimson and gold paint which is now almost non-existent. These planes were designed to combine the one tool, the functions of nearly all planes other than those performed by conventional flat-soled bench planes.
