TOOL: PLANE PLOUGH, SIZE 6 BLADE, "MARTIN AND SHAW"; WOOD WITH BRASS TRIM

Subcollections
Overview

Grooving plane with rebated bottom to take steel plate (skate). This plate is parted where the iron emerges and is curved upwards on the front half. A rectangular slot is cut into the inner side of the fence to make room for an adjustable steel depth stop, set by a brass thumbscrew at the top of the stock. The wedge which runs parallel to the iron is cut short at the base to avoid obstructing the escape of the shavings. The iron is set at approx 50 degrees and thickened towards the cutting edge, tapering towards the top. A V-groove on the underside of the iron engages a knife-edge on the sole-plate thus keeping the iron rigid. Iron size 6 knecked at the top for easy removal. Fence riveted loosely to two stems, D-shaped in section, tipped with brass which slide through the stock and are fixed in the required position with captive "keys" (wedges). The underside of both fence and the stems is moulded in ornate patterns for adornment and for a comfortable grip. The plane was used where a fully adjustable tool was required for grooving all kinds of work to take panels or for making joints.
