PHOTOGRAPH: MRS E.M. THOMAS O.B.E.

Overview

The black and white photograph shows Mrs Thomas seated next to a cabinet, holding an open book in her left hand which is resting on the top of the cabinet and a pen in her right hand. The accompanying typewritten note explains: 'Mrs E.M. Thomas M.B.E. writing to one of her many serviceman friends overseas.' Mrs Thomas is wearing her V.A.D. uniform of skirt, shirt, tie and belted jacket. The jacket is detailed with a red cross of white on left side and blue badge with red cross on right and epaulettes on shoulders. Above her right shoulder is the head and shoulders of a serviceman friend. Her handbag rests on the cabinet.

Historical information

Mrs Ethel Maude Thomas OBE Mrs Thomas was born in Victoria 1879 and came to WA after her marriage. She joined the St John ambulance Association in 1915 and became a Demonstrator in 1932. After forming the Subiaco Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment No 503 in 1933-34 she continued as its Commandant until 1944 when the Detachment disbanded. She was awarded the OBE in 1960 and died in 1963
