Overview

This colourful Chinese embroidered pale peach silk shawl, stitched in twisted silk yarn, is unlike many Chinese pieces using untwisted silk floss. The design elements from nature are very symbolic.

The peony flower, the Queen of Flowers, the flower of Spring, symbolises wealth, honour and prosperity. The lotus, flower of Summer, signifies purity, elegance, humility, peace and harmony. The bamboo, the tree of Summer, due to its fast growth a symbol of strength, youth, flexibility, symbolises quick achievement, luck & money.

Chrysanthemum, flower of Autumn, represents nobility and elegance, symbolising good luck, long life, prosperity.Prunus or plum blossom, strong, noble and modest is the flower symbolising Winter. Its five petals represent happiness, joy, longevity, peace and success.

The butterfly symbol of happiness, beauty & long life. Birds, (one here a pheasant), soar through the sky, connecting us to the heavens, are thought of as divine messengers to communicate our requests to the gods above.

A 130 mm knotted fringe on each end. The shawl is lined with off white silk fabric.
