GENERAL EMBROIDERY, CHRISTENING GOWN
1884An 1884 white lawn christening gown, with insertion work and embroidery, from ancestors of a Guild Member.
The gown has a yoke bodice with alternate rows, parallel lines of pintucks, machine Valenciennes lace and machine embroidered insertion edging. Neck has gathered machine Valenciennes lace and just below, herringbone stitching.
Placket opening at centre back is closed with a cotton tie at neck edge and two fabric covered buttons.
One has a hand-stitched buttonhole to close, the other, at the waist, has a twisted cotton loop.
Long sleeves, gathered at wrist are edged with machine Valenciennes lace. The skirt is gathered at the front and back, attached to the yoke. The base of the gown, has a frill 120 mm wide, made of 3 rows of pintucking, a band of machine Valenciennes lace with a row of machine embroidered insertion braid on either side. At the hem edge, is a machine embroidered whitework scalloped frill.
