First World War Black and White Photograph of the Outskirts of Jerusalem

1917
Overview

A small black and white photograph showing the rural outskirts of a city. The land at the forefront of the image is stony and there is nothing growing. In the distance trees can be seen and several houses. Further back in the image, the number of houses increases and, on the horizon, large buildings and towers can be seen. The reverse of the image has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription. The photograph has a small border and is in good condition, although there is a small stain along the bottom that shows front and back.

Historical information

The 10th Light Horse Regiment was the first representative of the Desert Mounted Corp to enter Jerusalem. In early December 1917, despite bitter conditions, the British fought to a position where Jerusalem was threatened from the west and south-west. In pouring rain on 8 December, the British infantry, with the l0th Light Horse Regiment and Worcestershire Yeomanry attached, succeeded in breaching the Turkish defences and forced the evacuation of Jerusalem. The city of Jerusalem was entered on 9 December.

Contextual information

“WA Soldiers Write” Published in the Sunday Times Perth 10 Feb 1918, an unnamed Soldier of the 10th Light Horse wrote “We have had a feather in our cap lately, as we are the picked troops -- that is, the 10th L.H.to first enter Jerusalem. We are also the only regiment mounted; all the rest having gone on foot on account of the rough and hilly country. I never thought that this place could be so hilly and rough.”
