First World War Black and White Photograph of Jaffa Gate Jerusalem

1917
Overview

A small black and white photograph showing Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem. The image shows the buildings that make up the gate in the background with a large open area in front of them. There is a tall clock tower that rises above the buildings. The buildings are bathed in sunshine and there are large shadows on the ground. Directly in front of the gate there are a mix of locals and soldiers standing in small groups and they appear to be talking. Passing across the image in the foreground is a local man in what appears to be traditional Hasidic Jewish wear with a brimmed hat and long coat.
The reverse of the image has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription. The photograph has a small border and is in good condition.

Historical information

Jaffa Gate is a 16th century Ottoman gate which is located on the western side of the old city of Jerusalem, facing the direction of Jaffa. It is the main entrance from the western section to the eastern (old city section). The tall clock tower behind the gate was constructed in 1909 by the Ottomans and dismantled by the British in 1921 to resume the ancient theme of the walls.
