First World War Black and White Photograph of Transport at Khalasa, Palestine

1917 - 1917
Overview

A small black and white photograph showing a large number of horse drawn carriages and mounted light horsemen together in an area of desert. Highlighted in the front right-hand corner of the image is an individual’s equipment pack including saddle lying on the ground. This pack sits in an area where grasses are growing in the sand. The remainder of the landscape appears bare. The reverse of the image has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription. The photograph has a small border and there are dark marks on the right-hand vertical border and onto the image on that side.

Historical information

Khalasa was close to Beersheba and was a resting place before the battle commenced. Second Lieutenant Henry KINGDON of the 10th Light Horse Regiment wrote on 29th October 1917 “the Brigade moved for Khalasa, arriving there in time to have horse lines down and saddles off before darkness set in.”
