Beaded Black Bolero Jacket by Aurelio Costarella, Western Australia
This waist-length black bolero jacket was designed, made, and intricately hand-embroidered by Aurelio Costarella, the celebrated West Australian couturier whose work fused precise craftsmanship with emotive storytelling. This piece exemplifies his dedication to texture and embellishment through its sculptural beadwork and carefully choreographed surface design.
Worked on a black crepe base, the jacket features raised vertical bugle beads topped with sequins and seed beads, stitched in a way that allows them to stand upright and catch the light. These densely beaded elements span the shoulders and upper body before transitioning to areas of shield-shaped metallic sequins and golden seed beads arranged in subtle patterns across the front and back.
Lower on the garment, the beadwork becomes more scattered, forming a delicate rhythm of seed bead clusters and sequins. A richly encrusted 25mm hem band—adorned with small sequins and seed beads—completes the garment, running along the base and centre back vent. Labelled "Aurelio Costarella", Size S.
Costarella’s work has appeared on global runways and is housed in major museum collections across Australia. Known for rejecting trend-based fashion cycles, he focused instead on garments that were expressive, timeless, and deeply personal. This bolero reflects his ongoing exploration of surface, structure, and light.
