1938 Australian Baseball Carnival poster
1938A colour poster, 48cm x 66.5cm, printed with black and red text on sepia-colour paper. The poster advertises the 1938 Australian Baseball Carnival in Perth, Western Australia, held between the 6th and 13th August.
Early in 1936 Western Australia commenced playing organised baseball. Later the same year they hosted a team from Victoria. In 1937 they made their debut in the Australian Baseball Carnival held in Adelaide, South Australia and in 1938 they were given the honour of conducting their first carnival.
This poster heralded the 1938 Carnival, which was the fifth annual competition for the Claxton Shield, an Australian national baseball tournament. Games were played at the WACA Ground and Subiaco Oval in Perth from 6 to 13 August. The other participating teams were Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. New South Wales won the Shield for the second time, successfully defending their title from the previous year. Hosts Western Australia had their best finish, losing to New South Wales 2‒0 in the final, to finish second overall.

In 1938 organised baseball was in its infancy in Western Australia. The opportunity for the people of that State to see the game played by the best exponents in Australia, promised many thrilling moments. The poster boldly announced when and where the public could witness the spectacle.
A valued addition to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives, this poster is part of the scrapbook of baseball memorabilia of Glen Dunstan, Vice-captain of the 1938 Western Australian team. The scrapbook was donated to the Museum by the Dunstan family.
This rare example of an Australian baseball poster of the 1930s, is of historic and social significance, representing a milestone in the history of baseball in Western Australia. It has impeccable provenance.
