Team Australia warm-up jacket – 1996 Atlanta Olympics
1996A 1996 Atlanta Olympics Australian baseball team warm-up jacket. Made of polyester, the lower half of the jacket front, back and sleeves are dark green with dark green nylon ribbing at the waist and cuffs.The top half of the jacket is white and the top of the sleeves have yellow, white and green bands of fabric up to the shoulder. Embroidered on the left breast is the Australian coat of arms above the coloured Olympic rings symbol and the words 'Atlanta 1996'. On the right breast is the manufacturer's logo. Appliqued on the back of the jacket is the word 'Australia' in dark green lettering, outlined in yellow. The collar is lined with yellow fabric. Inside, the jacket is lined with white nylon netting.
Baseball had its second appearance as an official medal sport at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States, with games played at Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium. Eight nations competed—United States, Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, Italy, Cuba, Nicaragua and Australia—with the event open only to amateurs for the second and last time.

Shane Tonkin represented Western Australia for 10 years with the Perth Heat from 1989-1999 and was part of the 1990/91 and 1996/97 championship teams. Considered amongst the top pitchers of his era in a Heat uniform, Tonkin also had the honour of representing Team Australia, where he was a member between 1993-2001, including the 1996 Atlanta Olympics campaign. He was an inaugural inductee into the Baseball WA Hall of Fame in 2021.
This Team Australia warm-up jacket was worn by Shane Tonkin at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and has been donated by him to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives.
A rare and well-provenanced item of Australian Olympic memorabilia, it has both historic and social significance. It represents one of many highlights in the long and stellar sporting career of a Western Australian baseball player.
