Peace Beaker celebrating the end of the Great War - large
c. 1919White bone china beaker produced to celebrate peace after the Great War.
It features a sepia illustration of Britannia astride her chariot with a lion to the rear. She is floating above the blue-green sea with a warship on either side.
Twelve colourful flags of the allies appear either side of Britannia in groups of six. Above her helmet is a sepia depiction of the world globe with a white dove at the top and the word 'Peace' in a band around the centre.
There is a scroll across the bottom which has the words 'Liberty Justice Truth Honour'.
The rim of the beaker features gold decoration, some of which has worn off.
On the reverse is a shield on top of a pair of crossed swords and floral decoration (English rose, Scottish thistle and Irish shamrock) and bow. The shield contains 'Sir David Beatty's Historic Signal'.
At the bottom are the dates of the start and end of the war.
The maker's details and logo (a crown) are printed in sepia on the base of the beaker.
Admiral Sir David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty (1871-1936), was the First Sea Lord who accepted the German Imperial Navy’s surrender at the end of World War One.
This is the larger of two similar beakers in the collection.
