Peace Mug celebrating the end of the Great War
c. 1919White bone china mug or cup produced to celebrate peace after the Great War by the Dartmoor branch of the Co-operative Wholesale Society Ltd (CWS).
It has a colourful illustration on one side, featuring a central white and green stippled world globe with a white dove at the top and a gold central band with the word 'Peace' in black and green text with a white background.
On either side of the globe are flags - the United States and France on the left and Italy and Great Britain on the right.
Under the globe is a green laurel wreath over which is a scroll with the dates '1914-1919' written on it. The words 'The Great World War' are written at the bottom.
The other side features an image of a rearing horse in a shield inside a circular motto 'Each for all and all for each'. The name of the company which issued the mug is written.
The rim of the cup features gold decoration, much of which has worn off. There is crazing to the china.
The maker's mark (a wheat sheaf with a shovel and other implements) and motto 'Labor and Wait' appear on the base.
The Co-operative Wholesale Society Ltd (CWS) manufactured bone china at the Windsor Pottery factory, Edensor Road, Longton.
The Co-operative Society produced commemorative ware for a number of Co-op branches and districts - generally to celebrate Gala and Anniversary event - in this case the end of the war.
