Historical information

The Mikasa was Admiral Togo's flagship during the 1904-1905 Russo-Japaneses war and sank after an accidental explosion in Sasebo Harbor Japan at wars end. At the time of painting it is likely she had been under water for some months. Later re-floated, repaired and recommissioned in 1907 she is now a museum ship in Mikasa Park in Yokosuka, Japan.
