WILLIAM CARMALT CLIFTON, PANORAMA OF ALBANY, 1861

1861
Overview

A watercolour and iron gall ink on paper. This panorama of Albany is painted facing the Albany foreshore from the artist's yacht, positioned in Princess Royal Harbour. Hand-written names of different buildings and landmarks stretch along the lower edge, immediately below the relevant structure or landmark. The watercolour has been painted on three sheets of paper, overlapped slightly and joined vertically to create one long sheet. This panorama is solidly adhered to an acidic, 1-ply backing card. The backing card has, in turn, been attached to canvas and applied to a wooden stretcher.
