Historical information

Western Australia was one of five State teams competing in the 1939 Claxton Shield Series. It was the sixth annual Claxton Shield, an Australian national baseball tournament. Games were played at Richmond Cricket Ground, Albert Ground, South Melbourne Cricket Ground and National Park in Melbourne, Victoria.

New South Wales won the Shield for the third time, successfully defending their title from the previous two years. Queensland joined the other four states for the first time in the tournament. The other participating teams were Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. It was also the first year an Australia national team was picked primarily based on the Championships.

The photograph appeared in 'The West Australian' newspaper on Monday 17 July 1939 with the following caption:
'The State baseball team which will leave for Melbourne next Saturday to take part in the Australian baseball carnival. Back row (left to right): F. Day, J. Beale, G. Dickinson, T. Merrett (manager), T. Nisbet, C. Puckett and K. Jeffreys. Front row: A. Barras, G. Dunstan (captain), L. Jones, B. Shom, D. Carr (vice-captain) and W. Nightingale.'

One of the earliest Western Australian baseball teams to represent the State, the 1939 team was the third WA team to compete in the Australian baseball championships for the Claxton Shield trophy.

The photograph forms part of a scrapbook which belonged to 1939 Western Australian State team captain Glen Dunstan. The scrapbook was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by the Dunstan family.
