CANVAS WORK, PICTURE
c. 1960 - 1969This canvas work hand embroidered picture is most unusual in that Gobelin stitch (vertical stitches) has been used rather the traditional tent/continental or half cross stitch. The embroiderer was born in Hungary where it would appear this technique was popular.
The picture of a bowl of flowers is worked in stranded cottons on Penelope cotton canvas.
Around the perimeter was stamped information. “GOBELIN TAPESTRY interpreted by Penelope”
Down one side are coloured boxes indicating the colours of stranded cotton required and the word ‘MARCEL”.
The tapestry was originally set in a wooden fire-screen which stood in front of gas heater.
Due to lack of storage space, the tapestry was removed from the screen and stored flat.
