LIMERICK, CHRISTENING GOWN

1911
Overview

An unusual style of christening gown, hand embroidered Limerick lace technique of needlerun stitches on cotton net, made and worn in Holland in 1911.

The yoke is a fine cotton sateen cut on the cross. Gathered/shirred net is stitched to the cotton giving it a triangular shape. A cotton tie is threaded through a casing at the neckline. There are indications of a silk fabric between the two layers. All that remains is trapped in the seams at neck, sleeves and skirt. At the point of the yoke at centre front, sits the remains of a silk rosette. The limerick lace frill was attached by hand.

The skirt open down centre front is net with limerick nnedlerun stitching in floral edging on the three sides.

Two metal press studs at back opening. These were removed and kept with accession form.
